A VERY SMALL FIELD GUIDE

You are the conductor.

  1. Build a constellation. Click an instrument on the left to switch it on. Its highlighted button means it is on the canvas. Click again to switch it off, or try a starter combination.
  2. Start sound. Pads breathe continuously. Melodies and drums play together on the same clock.
  3. Move around. Up raises pitch. Right brightens synths and makes rhythms busier. Get close to a node to bring it forward. The Mouse attraction slider above the canvas sets the pull strength; zero lets them roam freely. Wander adds smooth, random drifting.
  4. Play with forces. Canyon echoes the voices near it, Prism adds a harmony to nearby melodies, Quake makes nearby voices shake and tremble, and Singularity pulls voices in, dropping them an octave and to half speed. Seasons turns the chords, Messenger passes notes along the lines, Wind blows everything across, Entangle mirrors two voices, Fountain sprays singing sparks, Echo repeats nearby voices with a long tape echo, and Orbit swirls voices around itself. Pin a voice to keep it safe.
  5. Perform. The ghost conductor replays four bars of your cursor while you are away. Record saves the sound to a file. Share link copies a link to this constellation; on the website, Publish puts it in the public gallery under your name, and Gallery shows what others made. MIDI plays Keys from a MIDI keyboard and sends every note to a DAW or synth. Scenes 1–4 save and morph between constellations. Perform hides everything but the sky. On a phone or tablet, Tilt lets you conduct by tilting it. Play audio file puts a song or sound of yours on the Tape node, and Mic → Tape records your microphone onto it: higher plays it faster, and a click on the sky scratches it. Mic → Sampler gives the Sampler node a short sound that it plays as notes on the beat. Your sounds stay in this browser unless you choose Share: recorded audio on the canvas is then uploaded to this password-protected site. Clear removes every voice; Reset (click twice) also returns every control to its default. With Keys on the canvas, A–; and Z–M play notes; Record keys, play, then Stop & loop, and your notes loop in time.
  6. Make a ripple. Click or tap empty canvas to scatter the nodes and accent their sounds. Right-click a node to pin or release its position and mouse-controlled sound. Alt-drag a node to place it exactly; it stays pinned when released. Click a node to select it; ☷ opens its sound settings (volume, drive, tone, space, pan and an equalizer), and × removes it. At the bottom of the page, the master equalizer shapes the whole mix, with presets for headphones, laptops and late nights.

Touch works too. On the focused canvas, arrow keys move your influence and Enter sends a ripple. Space plays or pauses. Escape clears your selection.

Shape your sky. Below Audio, the Visuals tabs change the site theme, choose an equalizer, and mix in comets, rings or shifting colours. These choices stay in this browser; Reset restores them too. Reduced motion keeps the extra effects still.

Your constellation and controls are remembered on this browser. Sound always starts off. Switching away from the page pauses playback.

Right-click a canvas node to pin its position and mouse-controlled sound, or release it. Just this instrument. Synths start at 200%, drums at 100%, with clean drive, neutral tone, the usual share of reverb, a pan that follows the sky and a flat equalizer. Forces have a Strength instead, starting at 100%. Your settings stay when you switch a voice off or reload, and travel with share links.

MIDI IN AND OUT

Play along, or record it

In: each key plays Keys, snapped to the nearest note of the scale and as loud as you strike it; Record keys takes it too. Out: every note the constellation plays, each voice on its own channel and the drums on channel 10 as General MIDI drums. Pads and Tape have no notes, so they are not sent. A MIDI file keeps every note played while it records, a track per voice, at this tempo, for any DAW; it works without a MIDI device.
